TSB and SUB Arrange Distinguished Lecture Series 6 on Gender, Climate Change Adaptation, and Cultural Sustainability in South Asia with Dr. Sajal Roy

TESOL Society of Bangladesh, in collaboration with the Department of English Studies (DES) at State University of Bangladesh (SUB), organized the sixth session of its “Distinguished Lecture Series.” The lecture, titled “Gender, Climate Change Adaptation, and Cultural Sustainability in South Asia,” took place on December 13, 2022, at SUB’s Main Campus in Dhanmondi. The session featured Dr. Sajal Roy, a Research Fellow and Lecturer at the University of New South Wales, Australia.

The talk aimed to inspire students to develop an interest in relevant and pressing issues of our time. Dr. Roy discussed the gendered context of climate change, highlighting the challenges faced by climate change survivors. The lecture also explored global policies that seek to mitigate and reduce climate change, as well as the intersection between cultural sustainability and climate adaptation. Dr. Roy emphasized the importance of building climate resilience and the need for action at the grassroots level.

The event commenced with a welcome speech by Touhida Easmin Humaira, the Acting Head of the Department of English Studies. She outlined the objectives of the Distinguished Lecture Series. Professor Dr. Nawzia Yasmin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of SUB, commended the Department of English Studies for addressing an interdisciplinary topic of global relevance. Professor Dr. Anwarul Kabir, Vice-Chancellor of SUB, also praised the DES for continuing the lecture series and highlighted the issues of gender inequality, climate change, and global warming.

Participants included faculty members, undergraduate, and postgraduate students from various departments. The session was characterized by lively and enthusiastic engagement from the participants, who asked thought-provoking questions about their role in combating climate change. The event concluded with closing remarks from Professor Ali Ahsan, Dean of the School of Business and Social Studies at SUB, urging participants to take action and make changes in their everyday lives to stand against ecological destruction.
