TSB and SUB Host Distinguished Lecture Series 4: Education for Transformation with Lawrence N. Berlin, PhD

  • Categories Distinguished Lecture Series

TESOL Society of Bangladesh, in collaboration with the Department of English Studies (DES) at State University of Bangladesh (SUB), organized the fourth session of its “Distinguished Lecture Series.” The workshop, titled “Education for Transformation: Identifying Hegemony and Overcoming Entrenchment in ELT,” took place on September 18, 2022, at SUB’s campus in Dhanmondi. Launched in October 2021 to commemorate the university’s 20th anniversary, the series aims to disseminate knowledge in the fields of English Language, Literature, and Cultural Studies.

The workshop was conducted by Lawrence N. Berlin, PhD, an English Language Specialist for the U.S. Embassy and National Academy for Educational Management (NAEM). The workshop explored how English Language teachers often replicate the teaching methods they experienced themselves and encouraged teachers and trainers to seek alternative approaches to engage learners and teach more effectively. The discussion emphasized the need for English language teachers to evaluate and adjust their teaching methods to suit their students’ needs and deliver education in innovative ways that keep up with changing times.

The event began with a welcome speech by Touhida Easmin Humaira, Head of the Department of English Studies (DES). She highlighted the objectives of the Distinguished Lecture Series, followed by Professor Dr. Nawzia Yasmin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of State University of Bangladesh (SUB), who congratulated the Department of English Studies for organizing the series. Prof. Dr. Sayeedur Rahman, President of TESOL Society and Advisor to the Department of English Studies (DES), introduced Lawrence N. Berlin as the resource person and stressed the significance of research for educators while emphasizing the strong collaboration between TESOL Society of Bangladesh and the Department of English Studies.

The workshop saw participation from English teachers, faculty members, and undergraduate and postgraduate students. The participants actively engaged in workshop activities and posed thought-provoking questions, fostering a lively and enthusiastic learning environment.
